Why are there so few parts available for customizing the fourth generation Corvette? Why the apathy? Are our beloved C4's so wonderful and perfect that they can't be made any better? I find that very hard to believe. Every other car that I've owned (and I've had many others and they weren't all Corvettes either!) had a multitude of performance and appearance parts available to personalize the vehicle to your own likes and needs. Everything from the lowly Volkswagen Beetle or Type-3 to the venerable Chevy Vega or Ford Pinto. The Camaro, Mustang, Firebird, Charger, Challenger and Nova all had an extensive and still growing aftermarket. Even the other generations of our preferred flagship have an apparent growing supply of aftermarket parts and accessories. Just look in any of the major Corvette suppliers. The section for the C4 is considerably smaller.
Why are we ignored? The C4 has one of the longest production runs of the entire Corvette history. They are readily available for virtually every financial situation. It's relatively easy to pick up a decent, running C4 for around $10k. Granted, it will be an earlier model and its mileage will be rather high, but isn't that exactly what we look for when we want to hot-rod something? If your going to do a complete, frame-off, resto-rod kinda thing then who cares if it's running or not? If that's the case, there are plenty of sub $8k examples to choose from. On the other hand, if your looking more for a driver with some reliability that you can play around with, then you can expect to be dishing out $15k and more, sometimes way more.My point is this; there are plenty of fourth generation Corvettes out there and while there are a number of NCRS purists out there, I truly believe there are at least ten times that number of hot-rodders who want to build the beast of their dreams. The aftermarket, for reasons unbeknownst to me, have left us virtually in the dark. It seems to me that this is a huge market void that needs to be filled. We want and need the "go-fast" goodies, the wild "wow-that-looks-awesome" appearance packages. We want it all! Where shall we begin?
